Open Source Formal Messaging
The French DGA has initiated a project to develop an open-source military messaging solution based upon the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. The project is supported by the French Ministry of Defence and BT Global Services, and aims to provide a set of services to support formal messaging including:
- security - signature and encryption
- security labelling - using ESS
- status notifications - including signed receipts
- directory integration - for addressing information and certificate validation
- STANAG 4406 elements of service.
Some of these features are delivered as extensions to the standard Thunderbird client, but for the complete solution, a separate client, the MiliMail client, is required that has been forked from Thunderbird 2. It is not clear if, and when, the MiliMail client source tree may be incorporated back into the main Thunderbird source tree.
The STANAG 4406 elememts of service are provided by use of another mapping on to Internet Message Format heading extensions. This mapping, called XSMTP, provides support for the military messaging services over SMTP, but does not yet address the gatewaying to/from X.400 based systems. However, the MiliMail team have a comprehensive roadmap that covers this, and other issues.
A screenshot of the modified client can be seen here.
