STANAG 4406

STANAG 4406 Edition 1

Edition 1

STANAG 4406 Edition 1 (formerly known as Version 3.0) consists of the following sections:

STANAG 4406 was first published in March 1999 and in that time alot of experience has been gained in the implementation of STANAG 4406 Ed 1 systems, from both NATO and vendors. An Implementer's Guide is provided that both clarifies and amends the base standard. It must be read in conjunction with the main standard when implementing a STANAG 4406 system as a number of significant changes have been made, for example, the preferred security labelling mechanism.

Note that the WG5 website provides a reference to version 1.5 of March 2000 of the Implementer's Guide, but the latest version is actually version 1.11 of 17th January 2005.

Edition 2

STANAG 4406 Edition 2 has been sent for ratification and adoption by the NATO Nations. The Implementation Status document of 10th January 2006 indicates that the following Nations have ratified Edition 2:

  • Denmark
  • Hungary
  • Greece
  • United Kingdom (November 2005)
  • United States (April 2005)

The structure of Annexes is different from that in Edition 1:

Another Annex that was developed for Edition 2, NATO Profile for S/MIME CMS and ESS has now been dropped from STANAG 4406 and put forward as a separate STANAG, STANAG 4631.
There is now also an Implementer's Guide for Edition 2 (version 1.1.
